Independent Educational Evaluation

An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is an evaluation of a child’s learning needs that is done by a qualified professional who does not work for the school district. It’s meant to give an outside, unbiased perspective on how a child learns and what supports they need at school. Parents often request an IEE when they feel the school’s evaluation: missed something, underestimated their child’s needs, doesn’t adequately explain why the child is struggling, or doesn’t match what parents see at home. An IEE may assess: cognitive abilities, academic skills, attention and executive functioning, social-emotional and behavioral functioning, social communication, sensory processing, language development, and adaptive skills (daily functioning). It also includes an in-depth review of school records, parent and teacher interviews, and, if allowed, a school observation.
